The Battle of Arras took place in Arras, NorthEastern France, and was an Allied counter-attack against the German Army - an attempt by the British and French armies to stop the Wehrmacht advance toward the English Channel.

The British “Frankforce” division used two regiments of Matilda tanks, heavily armored for those days, as the backbone of the offensive. However, the offensive was shattered by determined resistance from the 7th Panzer Division, commanded by General Erwin Rommel, which, despite the heavy  losses, held the position.

Rommelused field Artillery and “flak” guns to knock out the British tanks, finding the German field guns ineffective.

After the tactical defeat of Arras, the British troops retreated to the English Channel and started Operation Dynamo to evacuate the French territories.

Period: Second World War
