Triceratops was the biggest and best known of the horned dinosaurs. It is believed to be among the last to become extinct. It belongs to the dinosaur family of ceratopsidae which roamed the earth some 144 to 65 million years ago during the Cretaceous Period. The fearsome looking Triceratops was a plant eater and reached a length of about 9 metres with a body weight of 8.5 tons. A large bony frill about the neck protected it from neck bites. The pointed horns measuring about one metre in length were a powerful weapon with which Triceratops could inflict severe and even deadly injuries on its enemies including Tyrannosaurus Rex. Triceratops travelled in groups or small herds and the horns were employed in fighting between rival males in territorial or mating combat.
